How to Introduce Fashion to Kids

Fashion is a form of self expression that almost everyone utilizes in order to let other people get a glimpse of who they are. While it may seem like a matter entirely reserved for the adults, that's not entirely the case. Allowing children to explore fashion as a means of art and self expression can empower them and boost their self esteem even at a young age.

One might argue however that young kids are basically too young to develop a sense of style. But that's not true at all. As they grow older, they become more aware of things and learn as they go on about what they like and don't like. It is therefore the responsibility of the parents to support them while also setting healthy boundaries when it comes to clothing choices.

However, what are the benefits of introducing fashion to kids at an early age? As mentioned earlier, it boosts their confidence and self esteem. Allowing them access to their wardrobe and giving them a chance to learn how to mix and match different clothes to develop their own style will teach them to become independent. Not only that, but also, it will also help improve the way they perceive themselves. Another benefit is that they learn how to have better time management. By learning how to dress up at an early age and knowing the basics of combining different outfits, this will save them time from deciding and figuring out what is best from their closet to wear. It also teaches them how to be disciplined and organized. Lastly, it enhances their social skills! Though it may seem as if there’s no correlation, well, think again, because people who know how to dress well have the confidence to interact with other people and mingle with them; the same can be said for kids too. Just knowing that they look good will make them feel great about themselves, making it easier for them to approach other people and become friends with them.

But what are other ways to help them into the groove of fashion while still maintaining the right balance in choosing clothes that are age appropriate for them?

Introduce Neutral Choices

Saying that pink is only for girls while blue is only for boys isn't the way to go. On the other hand, encouraging young girls to wear only frilly princess-like types of clothes while young boys wear only manly ones in colors of black or blue doesn't really help in the long run. Parents shouldn't encourage gender stereotypes but rather dispel them, and they can start with this through fashion options. The earlier children learn that these stereotypical fashion concepts aren't good, the better. This will help them be open minded individuals in the future who are non-judgemental, and accommodating of different choices with their fashion styles not being locked into one thing simply because of gender stereotyping.

Teach them about appropriate clothing

People are mostly free to dress up however they want, but on certain occasions a tank top or shorts might not be the best option. Keep in mind that while a child's freedom is important, there is still a need to draw the line when it comes to choosing what clothes to wear on which events. Teaching the children how to dress appropriately when the occasion calls for it is important. Not only will this help them be mindful of what they wear in the future, but it'll also increase their adaptiveness while keeping up with their preferred style. It will also help them develop good manners and become more aware and sensitive of events and situations that call for propriety especially with the dress code.

Teach them how to combine clothes

Mixing and matching different clothes may be a hard concept for kids to grasp. This is why parents should approach them with the basics such as complementary colors. Help them understand which patterns go together and which ones are too much, especially for everyday wear. Have fun experimenting with them and gently guide them onto options that are appropriate for their age while still maintaining the essence of the style they wish to try.

Consider what shops to buy from

Every clothing store offers different options. There may be stores where its clothing choices don't fit the likes or needs of a child. For a more effective and efficient shopping experience, it is best to check out a few stores and cross those off the list that don't match the taste of the children, then avoid it altogether. It is also a good idea to go for recommended stores since they offer choices that match the majority of what the shoppers are looking for. When shopping together, be hands free from them which means to allow them to choose which style or article of clothing they’re interested in. Occasionally, parents can still give their guidance such as pointing out which size fits them better. Allowing them to make their own choices along with that gentle push will help them gain confidence and trust in themselves.

Discuss the budget

Being fashionable always comes at a price. While most parents endeavor to give their children the best they can, it's just not possible to do so at all times especially when money is a bit tight. Discussing the budget with the children before going shopping is perfectly fine. This will teach them how to manage their money and approach shopping more meticulously.

The journey to self discovery starts at a young age. For kids, fashion is a gateway in which they can learn how to express themselves and be creative while also gaining positive self esteem. Of course, since they are still at an impressionable age, it is important to guide them through this journey of self discovery and teach them what they should know. Ultimately, by paying close attention to their fashion choices, parents will be able to understand their children better and offer the support their child needs when necessary.
