The cool winds have finally shifted into warmer temperatures as the weather forecast very much confirms that the dry season is officially in which means: Summer is here.
Living in a tropical country, like the Philippines, means that hot, humid weather is inevitable but it doesn’t mean that it isn’t utterly dreadful. It can be hard to focus with daily activities and work, especially when you’re sweating and the electric fan only serves to usher in more warm air. Air Conditioners on the other hand are absolute lifesavers but electric bills would go on high and that’s not ideal for those trying to save money.
However, Summer is still the season of beaches, outings, cool drinks and deserts! Certainly, there are activities to try out with the whole family that can battle the sun’s onslaught of heat waves. In light of the spirit of the dry season, here are five things you and your family can do to beat the heat.
Swimming (and other beach/water activities)
Starting off the list with the quintessential Summer activity aka swimming. The hot weather is calling for swimming in the refreshing waters, playing on the sand, and maybe taking a light tan. For those with a light schedule, consider going to the beach for some much needed unwinding.
If you’re looking to go to the beach, consider other activities too aside from swimming such as snorkelling, jet skiing, kayaking, etc. For your children who don’t know how to swim, consider teaching them during your trip or signing them up at the nearest school you can find and spending time with them there too in the waters. While on the trip, you can also go on exploring local shops and restaurants as well as hidden tourist places. Meanwhile, if you’re a little tight on money, consider going to your local swimming pool or even buying an inflatable swimming pool if possible. On the other hand, if you’ve got just enough for an outing, then going to a resort is a good option as well!
You can also try out other water-related activities like a water gun fight with your family members. If you have sprinklers at home, go and turn those things up and take a shower in them. Furthermore, if you’re feeling extra and playful, fill up a handful of colourful balloons with water and go on a little water balloon fight. There are plenty of creative and interesting activities to try out.
Ice Cream
A fun little challenge to try out is to taste different kinds of ice cream in the places you plan to go to. Maybe build the list as you go and rate the flavours with your family. It’s an interesting way to keep track of the locations you’ve visited while also taking note of what flavours to go for when you come back.
On the other hand, maybe once every week, buy ice cream that’s enough for the whole family to eat. Furthermore, make it a little more delicious and healthy by mixing in fresh fruits or serving the ice cream in different ways like putting it on top of belgian waffles, aside from the usual cone or glass bowl.
Another option aside from the usual ice cream is to make ice candies with the family like buko ice candy or mango ice candy!
Fruits
A healthy way to beat the heat is to eat more fresh fruits like watermelons and mangoes. Try to be creative when serving them up! For example, search up easy recipes on how to make a sorbet out of them and try making it with the whole family. Moreover, you can try creating a smoothie while also subtly adding vegetables in like carrots or cucumber for example. Making fusion-flavoured shakes is also another fun way of experimenting with fruit flavours. And if you’re feeling tired from work, a simple method to try out is to prep them up in advance and simply bring them out with your forks ready when it’s time to eat.
Nature trip/walk
Aside from the waters, reconnecting with Mother Nature is another activity to try out this summer.
Nature trips often involve being up close with trees, plants, cooling waterfalls, and of course getting a whiff of that fresh air. Consider going out with your family on one of these nature trips! Moreover, you can also opt to stay at a lodging faraway from the hustle and bustle of the city and is instead focused on bringing nature closer to you like a bed and breakfast in windy places like Tagaytay for example. Furthermore, you can try other outdoor activities like glamping!
Play games and other indoor activities
If all else fails, then playing games with the family is the way to go when it comes to battling the summer heat! But just how does it do that? It works as a distraction of course! Forget the heat and instead compete with one another to become the victor of the games you intend to play with everyone.
For example, round up everyone for a game of UNO. Nothing gets its players more worked up the way UNO does. Or if the family needs a little bit of brushing up with their vocabulary, then a game of scrabble would do just the trick! Creating little challenge activities are also great alternatives to try out like the first one to complain about the heat gets to wash the dishes for example.
Other indoor activities also include watching a movie with popcorn and cool drinks to go with it. Maybe do a karaoke session if your family is musically inclined, or if everyone knows how to play an instrument, try to compose a song together.
Truly, there are many fun-filled activities to do in the summer and the season has only just begun which means more hot days to come. Despite that, don’t forget to have fun and of course stay hydrated, put on a generous amount of sunscreen, and drink your vitamins!
