Whenever the new year comes, it’s tradition for everyone to come up with new year resolutions that can kick start their attempt at changing unhealthy habits or toxic patterns. While many people have given up on the idea of turning a new leaf because, let’s be honest, they’ll only fail later on, that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth an earnest try. After all, the new year signals new beginnings and a fresh start, but for those who specifically want to involve the whole family, then here are some new year resolutions to start doing with them.



Eating meals together



There is no better method of daily bonding time than gathering at the dining table and sharing a meal together. It is a great way to catch up with one another while enjoying delicious food.


Of course, it’s understandable that it might be difficult to have everyone around for a meal due to busy schedules, as a new year’s resolution, make it a point to at least have breakfast together, or set specific days like every weekend where everyone has to be home in time for dinner.



Going to bed at the same time


Sleep is important to everyone, regardless of age. While bedtimes are mostly implemented for younger children, it can be applied to the rest of the family as well.


As a new year’s resolution, make it a mandatory lights-out for everyone where all members should go to sleep. To ensure that everyone goes to sleep at the same time, collect and shut down all electronic devices.


This is a great way of making sure everyone is getting enough sleep and developing a healthier sleeping habit, while also lessening stress gained from looking at cellphone screens and social media. Moreover, it means no more sleeping-in, which makes for a more productive day for all the members to do their important tasks.



Exercise together



For those looking for ways to keep the family physically active and healthy, exercising together is a great way of doing so. Apart from the physical benefits such as toned muscles, exercising also helps lower stress and lifts up one’s mood.


While going to the gym is the ideal for most people, it might not be realistic for many others. Exercising doesn’t have to be too complicated or methodical, instead, going for walks with everyone, playing field games like badminton or catch, is plenty enough of activity. Meanwhile, for those who are into dancing, maybe try to learn a song’s dance choreography together. These simple ways will make it easier for everyone in the family to appreciate exercise.



Eat meatless once a week


Who doesn’t love meat? Almost everyone does! But this year, it may be time to try going meatless once a week. This means that for a day, meals essentially won’t have that thick, juicy red meat. Instead, cook dishes with more vegetables in it and eat more of that healthy greens and fruits. Not only is it good for the health but also expands the taste buds of everyone in the family, especially for the young ones who are picky eaters. It is also a good method of maintaining a healthy lifestyle with the whole family.



Start a weekly activity



This means to plan out a weekly get together activity. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, rather, these activities can be movie nights with the whole family, or even a game night! Bring out those dusty board games out of the cabinets like Monopoly or have a game of UNO. Meanwhile, make use of that Netflix subscription by watching a random movie with the whole family. Additionally, get creative in the kitchen and bake or cook up your family dinners as a team. There are a lot of fun activities to try with the whole family that will certainly make it memorable for everyone.



Do chores together

Doing chores alone is admittedly, boring especially for those who don’t find the aspect of cleaning fun (though it is essential). For people who find that the house tends to look like a mess, then it’s high time to round everyone up this year and start doing chores together. Perhaps set a day once every week or month.


With the whole family working on tidying up the house, it will feel less of a drag and more of a fun activity to do, especially since everyone’s involved. It also gives the wonderful sense of camaraderie and makes maintaining the cleanliness of the house much easier.



Reserve time for yourself—go on dates together



Now this one isn’t for the whole family, but rather for the parents.


It’s important that both parents still get time for themselves together and strengthen their relationship even more. This can be done by going on dates or simply spending time together away from the children. While family is of course important, keeping a secure marriage relationship is also vital. Catch up with missed activities during the Pandemic

2023 is certainly looking to be a brighter year than the previous ones where everyone had to stay at home due to COVID-19. With restrictions finally lifting up, and travel becoming more open, it’s a great idea for everyone to catch up with the activities that they just never got to do. It could be visiting faraway relatives, travelling abroad, or even going to visit theme parks and movie theatres. Despite this, still do keep in mind the protocols and remember to be careful as the pandemic hasn’t truly gone away.



Have a healthier communication with one another and keep an open mind



Communication is key in most relationships as it gives both parties a chance to understand each other better. Sometimes, it isn’t enough though as the other might misconstrue what one is saying which is why it is also important to keep an open mind.


Instead of arguing, reach out to one another and engage in a more respectful debate. No raising of voices or use of harsh words. Just a calm, honest talk where everyone can express their opinions, thoughts, and experiences throughout the day that has contributed to their stress. Letting these things out and being heard is really important, especially for teenagers who are undergoing so much change.
