Truth be told, no one likes to do household chores. And while there may be a few except ones who find it therapeutic, getting into the spirit of cleaning around the house and getting things in proper order can be a challenge to many. It definitely isn't the most fun activity to do, what with all the dust flying around and unwanted insects crawling out from their hiding places. But these reasons alone are what makes doing household chores important. To get over the hurdle of doing chores, perhaps the best solution overlooked by many is to figure out how to make it fun!
1. A tried and true method, the reward system.
Will make anyone's ears perk up in anticipation, after all everyone loves a good prize at the end of hardship. By adding a reward at the end of the list of things to do, one's level of motivation is increased and their reason for doing these chores apart from the fact that it helps in housekeeping is that they get a treat. Kids in particular will like this, but of course try changing it up once in a while so that they do not become dependent on receiving rewards when asked to do something.
2. Do chores with the whole family!
Things become even more enjoyable when doing it with other people. It raises the spirit of kinship and camaraderie too. In order to do this more effectively, split up the tasks and assign one or two to every member of the family. Finally, set the date and time where everyone’s schedules are clear and then get on with doing those chores together. For kids, easy tasks such as picking up litter in the room or sweeping the floors can be given to them while adults can do the more complicated or heavy tasks. Just by seeing everyone do their respective work can be inspiring and in this way, the whole family has another way of bonding with each other while still being productive.
3. Set it up as a competition.
Create an atmosphere that runs on one’s own sense of urgency by setting up a timer. First one who finishes doing the task can get another cup of ice cream at the end for example. This can help to raise efficiency and is a fun little competition anyone in the household can participate in. To make it even better, divide the family into teams and the first team who finishes their list of chores wins!
4. Create a cleaning playlist.
Sometimes, music is all one needs in order to get into the groove of doing something. Make a playlist with songs everyone in the family likes and during the scheduled day of handling chores, play it on a speaker. Soon enough, they might even find themselves unconsciously singing or swaying along to the music while doing their tasks. They might not even notice that they’re having fun at the same time. Having music around definitely creates a calmer, more focused yet uplifting atmosphere. Not only is everyone working but they’re also having fun at the same time.
5. Spruce things up with cute cleaning tools.
It sounds a little silly but using just the average broomstick and dustpan already makes everything mundane. Instead of bland designed cleaning tools, opt for cleaning tools that are cute, colorful or even sleek looking. Having a nicely designed tool, appearance-wise, would make anyone feel more energized in cleaning. People who like aesthetically pleasing materials would definitely find carrying out their household chores using such tools much easier and more enjoyable. Additionally, giving the kids their personalized cleaning tools could help them feel happier when doing their chores. If their favorite color is blue, get them a broom in the same color. On the other hand if they prefer those with patterned stripes then get them something of the same design!
6. Listen to a podcast while doing the chores because who says one can’t do two things at once?
Pop on that podcast while cleaning and not only are the muscles getting some exercise, but also the mind as well. By the end of it, one wouldn’t notice they’ve done just about everything in their to-do-list. Furthermore, listening to a podcast takes one’s mind away from the fatigue that comes with doing their chores. Instead their focus is shifted on the podcast rather than being drowned with thoughts of how tiring cleaning around the house can be.
7. Record the cleaning session with a timelapse, or even make a vlog out of it!
It’s a great way to keep it fun and refreshing. Not only that, but memorable moments like this with the whole family are captured and can be something to watch with the whole family in the future.
8. Play a bunch of games while playing.
It doesn’t have to be one where everyone's hands-on like a board game, but instead go for something like the Picnic Alphabet song which starts with the phrase “I’m going on a picnic, and I’m going to bring…” saying the name of the item that they are going to bring that starts with an “A” and everyone else follows suit but they have to stick to the order of the alphabet. Apart from that, family members can participate in a “Would you rather?” type of quiz where two choices are presented and one has to choose which one they prefer better over the other. Additionally, for the musically inclined family, a game of Song Association might do just the trick! Give a word and everyone has to take turns singing a song that contains the said word in the lyric.
9. Losing a few things here and there?
Then go on a scavenger hunt with the whole family! List down the places where the lost item could possibly be and the members will all go on a search for it. Whoever finds it first gets a nice reward or incentive! This could be applicable to other family members’ as well who have lost an item.
