Summer is almost always associated with fun times, vacation, beaches, and ice cream. It’s the season of doing the things you might’ve missed the last time but if you’re running out of ideas then here’s a small list of what you can do with the family for a fun, memorable summer.
Travel
Going on a vacation always works as an excuse to go out of the familiar four walls of your house especially if you're itching to do something about your monotonous circadian rhythm, but a summer vacation in particular is even more reason to venture out and have fun with the family! It's the season of walking on sand, swimming in cool waters, and going on trips with the occasional ice cream on cones after all.
Travelling isn't anything new, but it's also never boring especially when there are plenty of places to explore and various ways to do it.
Explore locally
If you've been travelling internationally in the past, you might want to switch it up and go on a local trip. You'll find hidden gems just waiting around to be discovered and perhaps a future go-to vacation spot for when you don't want to travel miles away. It's also an opportunity to learn more about a culture near you!
Roadtrip
If you're looking to spice it up then going on a road trip might just be what you need, although this would probably be more preferable for those with older kids. That being said, going on a road trip entails a long distance travel where you set the pace of your journey; allowing you to be spontaneous with your destination as it opens up more chances of finding beautiful, unheard of places along the road. It's also a great way to make memories and see new sights at the same time.
Outdoors
When you've been cooped up inside the house for too long it can start to feel a little stuffy which is why moving activities outside is a good change of pace.
BBQ
If you've got a yard outside don't pass out on the opportunity to make use of it! Host a barbecue with your family! Make sure to include everyone in this little get together from grilling the meat to choosing awesome music jams to listen to while doing your tasks. You can do a mini game of blindfolded watermelon smashing with a good old trusty bat.
Camping
Summer nights provide the perfect opportunity to go camping outside. It can either be near the comfort of your home or at a camping spot somewhere else.
Camping outside near your home doesn't have to be too complicated. Aside from a tent, comfy pillows and blankets, you can also bring out a few board games to play with the family and cold drinks stored in an icebox. If you're feeling up for a traditional camping snack, then making s'mores would be a great way to gather everyone around a bonfire—or you can just prepare these in your kitchen beforehand. Otherwise, stargazing and sharing stories is also another great way of bonding with everyone and creating new core memories together.
Picnic
Make eating outdoors a little more special by bringing your own snacks and treats! Going on a picnic is one of the easiest outdoor activities to do with the whole family.
Indoors
Consequently, if you're always out and would prefer to stay at home then it's not a problem! There's no shortage of fun summer activities, even indoors, for you to try with the family!
Homemade Popsicles & Smoothies
Going out to buy ice cream can be a chore especially if you're always running out. This time however, making your own homemade ice cream can be a fun experience to try with the kids!
By making homemade popsicles and smoothies, you'll be able to utilise various ingredients from your kitchen such as fruits. Have the kids choose which flavours they like and get on to it with a popsicle mould. On the other hand, all you need when making smoothies is a blender.
Treasure Hunting
Make one of your summer days a lively one by creating a treasure hunt around your house with your kids! The items they'll have to find may be old photos from when they were young for example.
Rainy Days
Even with summer the weather can still be unpredictable, but a rainy day to ease the heat would be a welcome change. Due to this however, plans might be cancelled and it's not always a bad thing especially when you get to just stay at home. Consider it a slow, lazy day.
Movie marathons or Netflix
Maybe it's time to get those movie DVDs out and go on a movie marathon with popcorn. Alternatively, you can never go wrong with binge watching shows on Netflix!
Play a board game
Round everyone up for a competitive match or two with a board game! If everyone's up for it, increase the stakes and the fun with rewards and consequences.
Learn skills together
These skills can range from cooking to playing the guitar. If your kid is learning something you're knowledgeable in, then this is the perfect time to mentor them! On the other hand if they're the ones learning something new that interests you, then you can both spend time together studying about it!
Moving & Exercising
Last but certainly not the least are summer activities involving a lot of moving and exercising!
Going on a scenic hike
If you're looking to get those muscles moving but aren't fond of anything too extreme or tiring, then going on a hike is your best bet. It's shorter and easier because hikes are set to follow marked trails. Your family won't just be walking around aimlessly because scenic hikes provide lots of wondrous sights to see.
Fishing
There are plenty of things the art of fishing teaches but the greatest reward that comes out of it is of course the supper you'll be having tonight—caught by your own hook! Of course, it might not be for the whole family but that is not the only activity you can do. You can also go hunting for shells and crabs on freshwater lakes or mud flats. But finding those places that offer such activities will need a little research.
